For the last few days, it has been insanely hot in the greater LA area. On Monday downtown reached a record high of 113 and Malibu reached 108! Now, this might not be breaking news for most people around the world. I mean, many places reach temperatures that high on a regular basis. This does become breaking news, however, when you take into account the fact that it is generally assumed that Malibu's proximity to the beach makes air conditioning unnecessary.
In response to the heat, creativity flourished on Pepperdine's campus. In the freshman dorms, students emptied their refrigerators and used them as holders for their fans. That way the fans were actually blowing cool air. A few less creative students attempted to sleep outside but were awakened numerous times by the sprinklers. Nathan and I dealt with the heat by moving to the sofa bed where we could benefit from our semi-portable air conditioner. With the air conditioner running, our living room was 85 degrees. Our bedroom and study were well over 90.
Finally, we have begun to see some relief. The air conditioner can't cool the apartment down past 75, but it's progress. A fellow Southerner made the comment that she enjoyed the heat because it reminded her of home. As much as I love Tennessee (and anyone who knows me know that that's A LOT), I just can't bring myself to make that statement. The heat is one thing I don't miss a bit.
